Over the next few years, biopolymers—and fibres derived from biopolymers—are poised to make massive inroads into a number of market areas dominated by petrochemical-derived products—such as polyester, polypropylene and polyamide (nylon).
Some of these bio-based materials exist in nature, while others can be chemically synthesised, produced by microbes or derived from biomass. Many are biodegradable.
Examples of bio-based polymers include: - polylactide (PLA) polymers and copolymers derived from agricultural feedstocks such as corn—of which the best known is Ingeo from NatureWorks, a joint venture between USA-based Cargill and Japan-based Teijin;
- polycaprolactone polyol polymers and copolymers—such as Tone from USA-based Dow Chemical;
- polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) polymers and copolymers such as Ecoflex from Germany-based BASF; and
- polybutylene succinate (PBS) polymers and copolymers—such as Biomax from USA-based DuPont.
