Editorial: Is India Waking Up to the Opportunities Provided by Technical Textiles? |
published in Issue 64, 1st quarter 2006
|
Much has been written about India’s growing strength in the production of textiles and clothing, and it is said by many that India is the only country capable of rivalling China as the world’s biggest producer.
However, India’s productive capacity in areas such as synthetic fibres and nonwovens remains small compared with operations established in China.
China and India between them account for over one-third of global GDP growth on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis over the past decade, and both have populations of over 1 bn people.
Both countries are vast in size and equally complex in terms of cultural and linguistic diversity. India is divided into 28 states and seven union territories with 15 official languages. Hindi, the mother tongue of 30% of the population, is the national language and yet English dominates national, political and commercial communication.
In China, by contrast, there is only one official language, Mandarin, but there are regional variants and dialects. English is not widely spoken although the Chinese government launched a campaign some years ago to promote the teaching of English in the country and to raise teaching standards.
