Editorial: 2004: Another Record Year for Man-Made Fibres |
published in Issue 59, 3rd-4th quarters 2004
|
On January 24, 2005, the textile machinery group Saurer1 announced that global fibre production reached “an unprecedented level” in 2004 as output hit 67 mn tons.
Saurer has come up with an interesting way of putting this figure into perspective. In 2004 the world’s textile industries processed more than 2.1 tons of fibres per second into yarns and nonwovens.
Geographically, Saurer points out that the textile needs of Switzerland—where it has its headquarters—were satisfied in less than one day’s productive activity in 2004. But in China it took two months of activity to satisfy the country’s textile needs.
Global fibre production in 2004 was up substantially on the previous year. Output was up by a massive 6.7%—more than double the 2.7% rise recorded for 2003. Furthermore, the 2004 increase was substantially higher than the long-term average growth trend of 2.7% per annum witnessed over the 13 years to 2003.
