Innovations in Fibres, Technical Textiles, Protective Apparel and Machinery |
published in Issue 46, 3rd quarter 2001
|
The innovations described in this report span a wide range of technical textile production technologies and uses—including novel biodegradable fibres based on renewable resources, sophisticated yarns giving exceptional cut-resistance or protection against electro-magnetic radiation, fabrics designed for their abrasive effect and others designed to reduce friction, and final products such as tougher armour, improved clutch plates, and an alternative to steel springs.
Much of the innovation and product development in the industry involves more than one stage in the supply chain. For example, an improved rayon tyre cord yarn for a new “run-flat” generation of car tyres will enable automotive manufacturers to adopt a whole new approach to passenger car design.
Many other examples show similar linkages. But above all, they illustrate the importance when developing textile-based products of identifying, adapting, and integrating key features of fibres, yarns, fabrics and assembly techniques to meet the needs of the final customer.
