This report includes statistical data and analysis of the Japanese man-made fibre and technical textiles industry under the following headings: man-made fibre production and consumption in Japan; man-made fibre consumption for technical applications in Japan; and production of technical textiles in Japan. It also includes an outlook for the Japanese technical textile industry, and contains a wealth of recently released data for 2016. Man-made fibre production in Japan declined in 2016 to its second lowest level on record. Indeed, there were declines in the production of filament yarn production and staple fibre production. Furthermore, consumption of domestically produced fibres for industrial textile production in 2015/16 was down by 6.3% to its lowest level in at least 19 years. There were some bright spots, however, as the production of "other synthetic" filament yarns rose to its highest level on record, and production of polypropylene staple fibre rose to its highest level since 1997. Also, production of industrial textile goods rose to its third highest level since 2008, and nonwoven fabric production for industrial use reached its highest level since 2008.
