In this report, the first in a series of three in which the world's top 40 nonwovens producers are profiled, Karen Bitz provides the latest information and analysis about the activities of the world's leading ten producers of nonwovens. Many of these players including Avintiv (formerly PGI), Fitesa, Freudenberg, Glatfelter and TWE Group have increased their sales as a result of acquisitions, investments in new lines or improvements to existing lines. Avintiv has acquired Companhia Providência. However, sales at DuPont fell after it divested its Sontara spunlace business to Jacob Holm Industries. Ahlstrom continues to focus on speciality businesses such as wall coverings, filtration and other speciality fabrics while Kimberly-Clark's Partnership Products business continues to focus on filtration, sorbents and wipes. Sales at Glatfelter will receive a boost from a new line for making air-laid nonwovens in North America while Suominen has an ambitious growth strategy which includes a new line for making wet-laid nonwovens in North America as well as improvements to existing lines in Brazil and Spain. Fitesa has completed new lines in China and the USA, and is adding lines in Brazil, Germany and Sweden. Meanwhile, TWE has entered the top ten for the first time after acquiring Libeltex and in 2015 the company purchased three USA-based nonwovens plants belonging to Vita Nonwovens.
