Profile of Mount Vernon Mills: a US leader in flame resistant fabrics

published in Issue 175, July 2015

Mount Vernon Mills is a diversified and integrated manufacturer of textiles, chemicals and related products for the apparel, industrial, institutional and commercial markets. The company started to produce flame resistant (FR) fabrics in 2005 in direct response to requests from its major customers and since then it has delivered more than 90 mn metres of these materials. In particular, its FR fabrics are used in the manufacture of protective clothing, and are designed to be highly effective in protecting workers against electric arc flashes and flash fires. Its specialisation in FR fabrics represents one of the components in the company's strategy for survival as a manufacturer of textiles in the USA. Indeed, in recent years, the company has invested significantly in its facilities to support full control of the processes involved in the preparation and manufacture of its FR fabrics, spanning fibre selection, spinning and weaving through to dyeing and finishing. Core customers for the company's FR fabrics include Carhartt and Cintas, two of the biggest users of FR fabrics for workwear in the USA. This report provides insight into the company's structure and development as well as an analysis of Mount Vernon FR fabrics. In addition, it provides insight into Mount Vernon Mills' major customers.
