Nilit, headquartered in Migdal HaEmek, Israel, is an established leader in the development and manufacture of nylon (polyamide) 6.6 products. The company produces a comprehensive range of performance fibres and yarns for textiles and apparel applications, and it also produces a range of speciality and general purpose polymers for compounding and alloying, extrusion, and injection moulding. The company commands control of an impressive global value chain which enables it to optimise efficiency, reduce the production of waste, and improve profitability. In doing so, it boasts a competitive advantage in what is a crowded and aggressive global market for nylon. However, in order to maintain its position in the market, Nilit must respond to mounting pressure to improve the environmental sustainability of the raw materials and processes it uses in the manufacture of its nylon 6.6. In order to do this, an opportunity lies in the development of nylon 6.6 products made using alternative bio-based materials. But there are issues which Nilit must address if the company is to succeed--not least concerns about disparities between the performance of bio-based raw materials and the performance of their synthetic counterparts.
