The latest update in this series of reports summarises the trends which were on show at the European yarn fairs for the autumn/winter 2016/17 season. The author of the report visited Filo, Pitti Immagine Filati and Première Vision Yarns where she interviewed exhibitors and found out first-hand which trends were proving to be the most popular. Overall, there was a positive atmosphere at the yarn fairs, due largely to the continuing popularity of knitwear as a high fashion item. Luxurious yarns are important for autumn/winter 2016/17, and many spinners are offering fine and sophisticated yarns in complex blends. Natural fibres are the favourites for the season - particularly mohair, cashmere, alpaca and other camelid fibres. Another prominent trend is that of wool yarns which have been treated to incorporate performance properties including quick drying properties, resistance to pilling, stretchability and water repellency. Colours at the fair were lively and inspiring, but natural fibre colours were also evident. Texture is key, and several spinners are offering felted yarns, brushed yarns, bouclé yarns and caged yarns.
