Fast track: Adidas and Nike overcome barriers to innovation

published in Issue 55, July 2016

In order to remain competitive, the major sports brands have to maintain a stream of technological innovations by investing in research and development (R&D) and consulting regularly with experts such as athletes, chemists, coaches and podiatrists. However, as these innovations become increasingly sophisticated, the attempts of the brands to innovate are facing growing constraints – mainly due to their huge global and complex manufacturing supply chains. Adidas and Nike, for example, have perfected some of their most advanced innovations at facilities in Europe using sophisticated equipment. However, the companies have had to ensure that their innovations can be reproduced using non-standard equipment in different manufacturing facilities worldwide – particularly in Asia, where most production takes place. This edition of "Fast track" examines some of Adidas's and Nike's latest innovations – namely Adidas Climachill and Nike Flyknit and AeroSwift – and the actions that the companies have taken to overcome associated issues in their global supply chains.
