Fast track: developments in aerogels provide new extremes in insulation for performance apparel
published in Issue 50, 3rd quarter 2014
Aerogels are remarkable materials - up to 99% of an aerogel by volume is air. As a result, the thermal insulation properties of aerogels are much greater than those of other materials and yet the aerogels are extremely light in weight. Also, aerogels are capable of providing a high level of heat protection as well as sound proofing. In the past, aerogels have been very expensive. Consequently, their use has been confined to high cost components for the aerospace and defence industries, and to one-off promotional exercises. However, dramatic falls in aerogel prices and new developments which make aerogels easier to use are enabling performance apparel manufacturers to incorporate the materials in garments in order to add value. This report provides information on the development of aerogels and their performance properties. Also, it discusses innovative uses of aerogels in nonwoven materials for apparel and industrial insulation.
