Fast track: is there a future for smart fabrics in sports monitoring?

published in Issue 44, 1st quarter 2013

The monitoring of a person's performance during sporting activities is gaining in importance worldwide. Indeed, many of the best known sportswear brands are producing textile heart rate strap monitors which enable athletes to keep track of their progress. However, advances in smart phones and other technologies are prompting many experts to question whether the integration of heart rate sensors into fabrics will be the most effective way of monitoring an athlete's performance in the future. The Mio Alpha sports watch from Physical Enterprise, for example, is able to wirelessly transmit data relating to the wearer's sporting performance to any Bluetooth v4.0 enabled smartphone -- without the need for a conventional textile heart rate strap monitor which may be uncomfortable to wear. This report looks at some recent developments in sports monitoring equipment, provides an overview of the market and highlights some of the developments expected in the near future.
