Fast track: tracking the sportswear industry in the UK |
6 pages,
published in Issue 19, 4th quarter 2006
|
The sportswear market is one of the most price-competitive markets in the UK.
Usage levels are high. Items of sportswear are purchased by almost 90% of people under 35 years of age, and by 76% of the population as a whole.
The UK sportswear market was estimated to have a value of £3.65 bn (US$6.72 bn) in 2006 (Table 1). This comprised £2.31 bn worth of sports clothing and £1.34 bn worth of sports footwear—slightly lower than the values recorded for 2005.
The UK-based market research company Mintel forecasts that the value of the sportswear market will remain static in 2007 and 2008 before rising gradually to £3.96 bn in 2011—in the lead up to the 2012 London Olympics.
