Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but for those being imitated it can be a costly business. In addition to lost revenues, those companies which are targeted by counterfeiters spend millions of dollars a year trying to stamp out the practice and catch the culprits.

Counterfeiting is estimated to cost the global economy as much as US$512 bn a year or 7% of world trade—according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the World Customs Organization. And, if the USA is anything to go by, much of this revenue is being stolen from the apparel and footwear industries.

In the financial year ending September 20, 2005, US authorities confiscated over US$93 mn worth of counterfeit goods. The leading commodity seized was apparel. At US$16.1 mn it represented 17% of seizures in terms of value. Footwear represented 10% or US$8.9 mn in value.

A report in 2002 by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), entitled Counting Counterfeits: Defining a method to collect, analyse and compare data on counterfeiting and piracy in the Single Market, stated that textiles and sporting goods were among the most readily counterfeited products. Close replicas of the real thing can be easily sourced at low cost and sold at a high mark-up.

Textiles which are of low cost can have a similar appearance to higher cost materials, even though the genuine article may be more technologically advanced.
