China is the world's largest producer and exporter of textiles and clothing. The operations of its textile and clothing industry are extensive, and range from the production of raw materials to the manufacture of finished goods. The industry's success can be attributed to high productivity, an emphasis on training and the development of skills, investment in modern manufacturing machinery, a loyal workforce and an ambitious entrepreneurial spirit. Looking to the future, further impetus will be provided by the growing domestic market, aided by the country's growing middle class and rising disposable incomes in the country. However, wage levels have risen strongly and are already markedly higher than in most other countries in Asia. Another issue is that, despite the relaxation of China's one-child policy, the country's population is ageing and there will not be enough young people to recruit for manufacturing activities in the short to medium term.
