Profiles of major textile and clothing manufacturers and retailers in South Africa

published in Issue 25, 1st quarter 2014

The clothing industry in South Africa has consolidated substantially in recent years, and today a significant number of the larger manufacturers have financial links or strategic alliances with the major South African retailers. The clothing retail industry, on the other hand, has grown significantly. So have the five largest retailers, and together these account for about 50% of total retail sales in South Africa. In fact, these five retailers are by far the largest in the whole of Africa, and their scale has enabled them to expand beyond their national borders by making inroads into neighbouring African countries and then branching out further afield. This report profiles five textile and clothing manufacturers in South Africa -- namely Celrose Clothing, Kingsgate Clothing, Ninian and Lester Holdings, Prestige Clothing and Seardel Group -- and the top five apparel retailers in South Africa, namely Edcon, Mr Price Group, The Foschini Group (TFG), Truworths and Woolworths. It also provides a general overview of the textile and clothing industry in South Africa. This report provides valuable insight and analysis into the major players in the South African textile and clothing market.
