Global apparel trade and trade policy: the EU clothing import market and its ten largest supplying countries, November 2022
published in Issue 51, November 2022
This report provides vital data and analysis of trends in EU clothing imports from the ten largest supplying countries. It also provides insight and analysis of developments in the clothing sector in each of these countries and provides forecasts for the future. In 2021 EU clothing imports rose in value but remained below the levels seen during 2017-19 as the rise followed a decline in 2020, reflecting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In volume terms imports increased but remained below the levels seen during 2016-19. Increases in clothing imports were observed in 16 of the 27 EU countries in value terms and 14 of the 27 EU countries in volume terms. Increases in average import prices, however, were observed in only seven of the 27 EU countries. The EU's ten largest clothing supplying countries were Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Morocco, Myanmar, Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey and Vietnam. China was by far the EU's largest clothing supplier in value and volume terms. However, the sharpest increase in value terms was in EU clothing imports from Morocco, followed by those from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. EU clothing imports from Morocco also grew at the sharpest rate in terms of volume, followed by those from Pakistan and Turkey.
